Visa
If your primary purpose of trip is to attend the conference, you need to apply for Conference Visa. If your primary purpose of visit is sightseeing and general visits, you can apply for a Visitor visa.
Transport
You can use Uber or Ola services to get a ride. You can also ask the hotel to book you a vehicle. If your credit card is enabled for international transactions and you have added it as a payment method in the app, then the payment will be seamless. Otherwise, make sure you have cash to pay the cab driver (which they anyway prefer over automatic payments to Uber or Ola!).
Roads in Hyderabad are not pedestrian-friendly. Unless you have done it before, we strongly advise you not to walk to the venue. You can get an Uber or a 3-wheeler (called Auto locally, Auto rickshaw) even for a very short distance. Facilities page has more details.

If you are staying in one of the designated hotels (see Accommodation page for the list of hotels and which ones have the shuttle service), we will have shuttle service between these hotels and the venue. If you are not staying in one of these hotels, take a look at this question: I am not staying in one of the designated hotels. What transportation options do I have?
Any one of the following should work for you:
- Check with your hotel, they may offer a pick-up service. For people who have filled the arrival information form, CompEd volunteers are ensuring their pick up from hotel (or otherwise) is confirmed.
- Your Uber app will work seamlessly here, just book a cab to your location and follow the signs to Uber cabs when you exit. Make sure you have enabled your credit card (that you have set up on your Uber account) for international charge. However, sometimes Uber driver may insist on getting paid directly and not via Uber. So check before you get on the cab. Carrying cash in such situations is a good idea, see Do I need to carry cash with me?
- There will be a helpdesk at the airport manned by CompEd volunteers who can help you book local cab to your hotel.
- If you are coming at an odd time (late night or early morning), or for any other reason you need pre-booked taxi, definitely ensure you have completed the arrival information form.
Money
The best way of accessing cash in India is to withdraw it from any local ATM using your bank debit card, as long as it has Visa or Mastercard logo (a few other logo are also supported by ATMs). It will attract some additional charges for international access and currency conversion charges, but it is hassle-free. Please review Facilities page for more details.
Most businesses will accept debit and credit cards (American Express cards have much less acceptance than Visa and Mastercard) so you do not need to carry cash in most cases.
Carrying USD 50 worth of cash (INR 4000) at all times should be good enough for most eventualities.
The airport has money exchange counters. Additionally, some hotels also do, check with the hotel you are staying in. There are foreign exchange services nearby as well (Thomas Cook for example). Please review Facilities page for more details.

Leisure
It is a great idea! Hyderabad is a culture-rich place and a long history, you will enjoy going around in Hyderabad and nearby places. If you have a few days at your disposal, you can also consider visiting a few other cities.
A few places that are must-see are the following, you can book a cab (your hotel will help you get them booked) for full day and they will take you around, most places will also have a guide, or you can take a guide with you:
- Charminar – extremely crowded since it is very popular and in the heart of the city. Must-visit if you want to see city culture up close and buy some local stuff, like bangles, pearls, dresses, etc. Plan for 3-4 hours at the minimum.
- Golconda fort – A fort with a rich history. Light and sound show in the evening is great to watch to know about the history. Plan for evening visit for 2-3 hours and be ready for a short hike
- Chowmahalla Palace – A palace to behold!
- Salar Jung Museum – One of the largest museums of the world.
- Statue of equality – A new addition to Hyderabad, worth visiting if you are interested in religious aspects of Indian culture.

We welcome you to try the food that our students and faculty enjoy every day! However, it is a good idea to go with a local person so that they can guide you about the spiciness or taste so that you can enjoy better. Also, these places will not take card, so either you should carry cash, or rely on your local host to pay using cash or UPI (only the most common and ubiquitous payment mode in India).

- Do not feed them or pet them unless you are will someone who is familiar with them

A local SIM card can give you a local number and high speed internet at an affordable price, so you should consider getting one. However, you need an unlocked phone which can take a sim card. If you plan to procure a SIM card here and you don’t carry an unlocked phone, make sure you visit your local provider and get it unlocked before you travel. This is highly advisable. However, this is likely to be expensive, so if you have an option for pay-per-use, take that so that you can use it in emergency. For regular usage, our advice is to get local SIM card which provides voice and data access. See Should I get a local SIM card while I am in India?
If you are going to land in Hyderabad with neither your data plan or international roaming, please make sure you have the pick-up confirmed and have the details with you. Do carry the local number of our volunteers or conference committee members for emergency, and try to carry cash. See Do I need to carry cash with me?

COMPUTE
COMPUTE is an annual Indian conference supported by ACM India and iSIGCSE that is focused on computing education. To enable better collaboration between Indian and International community of CS education researchers and practitioners, COMPUTE 2023 is being held at HCU (which is next door to IIITH) right after ACM CompEd 2023, with one day overlap (last day of CompEd overlaps with first day of COMPUTE and is held in IIIT Hyderabad campus). You can find more details about the conference from their website: COMPUTE 2023.
It is a separate conference and hence you need to register for it separately, you can find the registration page here: COMPUTE 2023 Registration.
The COMPUTE 2023 website is the best place for all the information related to this year’s COMPUTE. If you need some specific information that you can’t find on the website, you can write to the organizing chair.
